Negroamaro is one of Puglia’a signature grapes producing hearty dark reds with a matchless floral perfume. Unlike Primitivo, which is found elsewhere, most notably in California where it is called Zinfandel, Negroamaro has remained an uniquely Southern Italian grape. It was originally planted in Puglia by Greek colonists almost 3,000 years ago. Today Negroamaro is the most widely planted red grape in Puglia and is a mainstay of many of the regions great wines like Salice Salentino. Albea is one of the premier examples of the new wave of Puglian wine. They embrace the use of modern techiques and equipment, and their team, assisted by the famous oenologist Roccardo Cotarella, produces consistently great wines. This Negroamaro has a lot of fruit and color thanks to a long, 16 day maceration.

Tasting Notes:

Bright ruby red wine with attractive fruit and licorice aromas. Dark red fruit, coffee and spice flavors on the palate leading to a crisply acidic, earthy finish. Smooth tannins lead to a pleasant finish. Drink now through 2008. This versatile wine will go great with a variety of foods from barbecue, burgers and other grill fare to pizza, pasta and strong cheeses.
