Carmenère is an ancient, late-ripening Bordeaux grape that has now disappeared in Europe, but thrives in Chile’s longer growing season. As recently as the mid-nineties, it was still being confused with Merlot--many of the Chilean Merlots we enjoyed a decade ago, were actually Carmenères! With more tannin than Merlot, but less than Cabernet, Carmenères are known for having fruit and herb aromas, and richness in the mouth. This example aged for 8 months in medium toast American oak barrels. A gold medalist at the Catad’Or Hyatt wine awards in Chile.

Tasting Notes:

Deep cherry red color. Complex nose of black cherries, berries, and herbs with a hint of coffee. Good structure and body with spicy vanilla, berry notes and great soft tannins. A very drinkable balance of fruit and oak that can accompany beef, lamb, roasts and cheeses. Drink now through 2010.
