One of the wines of the vintage. Wine Spectator gave it a 94 and Robert Parker gave it a 95 for its pure black currant and licorice flavors, full body, and long heady finish. Can cellar until 2030.

Château Léoville-Las-Cases is one of the oldest estates in Bordeaux; the Moytié family started to plant vines in the mid 17th century. Even before the 1855 classification was drawn up, Léoville was classified second only behind the four accepted 1er crus, Latour, Lafite, Margaux and Pontac (Haut-Brion). After a careful hand-harvested selection, this distinguished 2002 vintage was made with only 43% of the final production. This great Saint-Julien is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon 67%, Merlot 15%, Cabernet Franc 13% and Petit Verdot 5%. Robert Parker characterized this wine as “one of the half dozen or so candidates for wine of the vintage”.


Tasting Notes:

The color is a dark purple with a remarkable density that combines finesse of the aromas and a solid construction. This outstanding Léoville may be recognized by its unparalleled bouquet of black currant, rich licorice flavors and a very long lasting finish. Still young and tannic, it is nevertheless promising, rich, intense and full-bodied. Can be enjoyed now, but will be at its best from 2015 on for the next decade and more.
